Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) vs. Covermeter Survey
If you’re looking to evaluate the condition of a concrete structure, including concrete depth and the location of reinforcing bars, metallic ducts or cracks, there are 2 ways to go about it: ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and covermeter surveys.
GPR uses electromagnetic reflection to create an image of the subsurface depth. The process requires a complicated equipment setup, is quite expensive and cannot be used in areas with heavily congested steel.
In contrast to radar imaging, covermeter surveys use a low-frequency magnetic field that's applied on the surface of the structure and provides more direct results.
With GPR, other tests are needed to confirm results
More About Covermeter Surveys
Adequate concrete cover in a structure is crucial as it ensures that the steel reinforcement is maintained at a sufficient depth to be well away from the effects of carbonation and aggressive chemicals. At mtaCONSULT, we use electromagnetic devices called covermeters to check on the steel reinforcement in structures.
The process is cost-effective, quick and can be used to measure large areas. We can test concrete surfaces exposed to:
- Abrasive action by sea water
- Alternative wetting and drying
- De-icing salts
- Rain
Covermeter surveys are cost-effective and provide direct results
We understand the deterioration processes that affect:
High-rise buildings
Swimming pools
Office buildings and multi-storey car parks
